Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft

By July 18, 2023January 22nd, 2024No Comments

Catalytic converters are an important component found on the underside of cars and trucks that clean the exhaust to reduce air pollution. Last year over 150,000 were stolen from cars in the US, compared to only about 15,000 in 2020. To avoid this happening to you, it helps to know what kind of cars are most commonly targeted and where. In particular, gas-electric hybrids are favored by thieves because the different technology requires higher amounts of the precious metals found in catalytic converters. Trucks are also favored by thieves because their higher ground clearance makes it easier to steal the converter from underneath.

According to Carfax, the cars with the most converter thefts in the Mid-Atlantic (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C.) are as follows:

  1. Honda CR-V
  2. Ford F Series
  3. Honda Accord
  4. Ford Explorer
  5. Mitsubishi Outlander
  6. Toyota Camry
  7. Ford Econoline
  8. Chevrolet Equinox
  9. Chevrolet Cruze
  10. Toyota Prius

Before you worry too much, keep in mind that many of these models are simply the most common, resulting in more thefts. The areas for caution are those models that, in addition to trucks and hybrids discussed above, are models that have a high number of thefts despite not being very common. For example, the Chevrolet Cruze is #9 in thefts even though fewer have been sold to the point of the model being discontinued.

While recent reports show that these thefts are an issue even in places like car dealerships and other well-lit areas, minimizing your exposure still goes a long way. Strategies include both where you park your car and installation of theft-deterrents. For example, park in locked garages or lots and in well-lit areas when possible. Theft-deterrents can include both alarms and parts that make it more difficult to remove the catalytic converter. One such part is a metal cover that makes it more time-consuming to remove the converter. Another is cables attaching the converter to the frame of the car. Be sure to consider the pros and cons of any changes made to your vehicle.

Finally, you can check your insurance policy to find out whether such thefts are covered, and modify your policy to cover them if necessary. Many motorists have had to foot the bill for a new catalytic converter, which is $2000 to $3000, as insurance policies often do not cover this kind of loss. To cover catalytic converter theft, you need a policy with comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage covers many of the ways your car can be damaged apart from being in a collision while driving. For example, in addition to catalytic converter theft, comprehensive coverage would cover the loss if an animal damaged your vehicle. Thus, it helps in many situations where other coverages would pay out.
